New biology
Synthetic biology and systems biology
Synthetic biology combines science and engineering to construct new biology from ‘scratch’. Systems biology uses a combination of computational and biological techniques to make sense of living systems.
At Innogen we:
- study the relationship between systems biology and synthetic biology
- analyse how systems biology is establishing itself as a new field
- investigate the social, regulatory and ethical questions raised by synthetic biology, including open source and intellectual property management
- develop creative, alternative ways to explore synthetic biology, i.e. by bringing together artists and designers with scientists and engineers from around the world
Stem cells and therapies
- study the social, cultural, regulatory and ethical dimensions of stem cell research and its applications
- engage with the public to explore their views on stem cell research and its applications
