Title: Mr. Job Title: Innogen Postgraduate Student Tel: +44 (0)131 651 4098 Fax: +44 (0)131 651 4278 Email: A.Maleki@sms.ed.ac.uk Building: ESRC Innogen Centre, University of Edinburgh, Old Surgeons' Hall, High School Yards, Edinburgh, EH1 1LZ Room Number: 1.03
I was first educated as an electrical engineer at Amirkabir University of Technology, but gradually became interested in the role of technology in the competitive advantage of business enterprises and selected MBA with concentration of technology at Sharif University of Technology for my postgraduate studies (Managing science and technology). Understanding the increasing importance of science and technology in the sustainable development of societies in one hand, and the complex process of formation and diffusion of science and technology in the context of specific social environments in the other hand, I decided to continue my research as a PhD student in science and technology studies (STS) at the University of Edinburgh, in the Institute for Studies of Science, Technology and Innovation (ISSTI) to study systemically the ways to improve the positive impacts of the science and technology while limiting their negative influences (Governing science and technology).
My research interests can be described at two levels:
At the practical level, my overall field is the relationship between science and technology; and development. Particularly I am interested in the formation of technological and innovative capabilities in developing countries. Related areas of interest are systems of innovation (regional, sectoral and national); FDI and global production networks; science, technology and innovation policy; industrial policy; foresight; finance and innovation; and knowledge based economy. Taking an industrial perspective, I have some experience in health and biotechnology, ICT, renewable energies and natural resource based sectors (oil, gas and minerals).
At the more fundamental level I am interested in the philosophy and sociology of science and technology; methodology and epistemology of economics and social sciences; religion, and science and technology.
Research Objectives:
The focus of my current research is on the formation of innovative and technological capabilities in resource rich developing countries. While a few resource rich countries, which have been exporters of natural resources have been able to move towards a more innovative knowledge based economy, the innovative performance of many have been disappointing. They are still largely dependent on the export of natural resources and have been unable to build innovative capabilities and diversify their economies, either in industries related to natural resources or in unrelated sectors. Using a comparative case study method, the objective of my research is to study and compare the experiences of more successful and less successful countries in industries related to natural resources to better understand this difference in their innovative performance.
