Details of Siân's PhD project at Innogen
Siân's PhD project was called 'Health care practitioners’ discourses concerning termination of pregnancy – Views on current medical practice and the law'
This PhD project aimed to explore Scottish healthcare practitioners' (HCPs') views about their role in abortion provision. Current UK law requires that women seeking abortion obtain the signature of two doctors who have decided that they have grounds for the procedure. It thus constructs abortion as a matter for the expertise of HCPs rather than a decision to be made by women seeking the procedure.
Siân's research will examine what this law means in practice, and will focus on HCPs' views about the expertise that is involved in decision-making about abortion. It aims to address a wide range of viewpoints, and will include HCPs who are involved in provision without having legal responsibility for decision-making (e.g. nurses), as well as those HCPs who object to abortion on the grounds of conscience.
