Title: Dr. Job Title: Former Innogen Research Fellow Fax: Email: Building: Room Number:
Simon has an academic background in Social Anthropology (M.A. University of Manchester) and Environmental Epidemiology (MSc London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine). He completed his PhD in May 2007 (St George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London). The PhD explored the use of Racial and Ethnic Categories in Genetics and Biomedical Research. The study examined the relationship between science and society in the production and interpretation of racial/ethnic data, especially the conceptual and methodological frameworks used to present racial/ethnic identities are genetic categories or casual epidemiological variables. Simon joined the Open University Innogen Research Centre in September 2007.

Simon is involved in the following Innogen project:
Currently Simon is working on a project exploring the implications of genomics and biotechnology in sub-Saharan Africa and the potential for increasing communication about the issues raised, through existing networks in Africa. The project involves interviewing biological and genetic scientists, science journalists, and others interested in the dissemination of information stemming from genomics within Africa. The proposed outcomes of the project include the development of written training materials, a conference/workshop to be held in South Africa, and increasing inter-disciplinary communication on the potential benefits and risks associated with biotechnology as applied to the sub-Saharan African health, agricultural, and environmental context.
