Peter Arnott, Resident Playwright at the ESRC Genomics Forum

Peter was born in Glasgow and has been working professionally as a playwright since 1985 when The Boxer Benny Lynch and White Rose opened in the same week in Glasgow Arts Centre and the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.  Plays since then have been Muir, Losing Alec, The Wire Garden, and Cyprus among many, many others, including translations and adaptations, screenplays, cabaret and song lyrics.

Recent adaptations have included Neill Gunn’s The Silver Darlings and, forthcoming, Robin Jenkyn’s The Cone Gatherers, both for His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen.  His work has appeared throughout Scotland, as well as further afield.  His play The Breathing House won the TMA Best Play Award in 2003. He was a recipient of a prestigious Creative Scotland Award in 2007. He was Writer in Residence for the John Murray Archive at the National Library of Scotland 2008-11, where he delivered a series of `lectures with actors’ on the social context and impact of Darwin’s Origin of Species.

 A dramatic lecture.

Peter Arnott will be working with a small group of actors to embody an argument at the heart of Genomics, Genetics and Evolution; to find the threads and interrogate the texts that define existence as we know it... or don't know it.  The results will be presented in a dramatic confrontation of ideas about what it all means to be human, alive and conscious. Peter is undertaking this activity in his role as Genomics Forum/Traverse Theatre Resident Playwright 2011.
