The ESRC Innogen Centre and the Centre for African Studies is hosting the first of two book launches and wine receptions in the Crystal McMillan Building, University of Edinburgh this autumn.

Science and Technology for Development

Dr James Smith will deliver a public lecture entitled ‘Can the future make poverty history?’ to launch his new book,/ ‘Science and Technology for Development’/, published by Zed Books in August 2009.

In 'Science and Technology for Development', James Smith explores the always complex and sometimes fraught relationship between society and technology, and its potential for making sustainable contributions to global development. Drawing on research from Africa, Latin America and Asia, he argues that we need to think carefully about science and its role in development, otherwise the perpetual promise of future technological breakthroughs may simply work to distance meaningful development from the present. This book is essential reading for all students and practitioners of development.

Dr James Smith is Acting Director of the Centre for African Studies and Director of Developing Countries Research at the ESRC Innogen Centre.
