Researcher Name: Rebecca Dimond Project Start Date: 28.11.2007 Project End Date: 28.11.2007 Contact Details: - Funder: Background: The focus of this study is the sociology of medical knowledge, and the implications of genetic technology for lay and professional understandings of psychiatric conditions. I will examine the knowledge and practices of patients and their family-members, and the knowledge and practices of professionals and will document how these two domains intersect in constructions of psychiatric conditions, risk, and family relations. The study will initially be an exploration of genetic conditions which have an association with psychiatry, For example, current research has identified that patients with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) or Darier’s disease have a higher than average risk of developing psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder. Although VCFS and Darier’s are relatively rare conditions, they have become the focus of increased research activity by offering a unique 'model' for genetic psychiatry which has the potential to impact on the identification of psychiatric disorders in the wider population. However, the relationship between these genetic conditions with psychiatry have specific consequences for clinical practice, as well as having a potentially significant impact on the way in which individuals and family members experience these conditions. Aims and Objectives: Research Methods: Key Findings: Wider implications for policy: Project Update: Publications: External Links: Further information:
