Abstract:

In the ten years since \'Dolly\' became the first mammal cloned from a cell it has become increasingly apparent that biotechnology and genomics have the capacity to add a new dynamic to the changing social and ethical relationships between humans and other animals. These new techniques and technologies raise key issues for our ethical treatment of other animals.

Engaging with natural scientists as they confront the social, economic and ethical questions of working with animals sheds important light on how research practices take or fail to take account of animal welfare. Different kinds of research lead to different conceptions of animals, which in turn leads to different standards of treatment. The varied approaches to animals point to the importance of regulatory apparatuses that help secure animal welfare as well as support needed scientific research.
