Prof van Heyningen is head of the Medical and Developmental Genetics Section at the HGU. She is distinguished for her research on phenotypes and genotypes in both man and mouse and her research has clarified the mechanism of a malformation of the eye.
Prof van Heyningen supervised Innogen PhD student Nicola Marks on her thesis "Opening up Spaces for reflexivity? Scientists' discources about stem cell research and public engagement".
