Matthew Harsh is based at the Genomics Forum as part of the Economic and Social Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme. Before pursuing a career in the social sciences, Matt earned a BSc in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University and worked as a materials engineer. As a Marshall Scholar, he completed an MSc and PhD in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the University of Edinburgh. Matt's research focuses on innovation, regulation and governance of agricultural biotechnology in East Africa. He is particularly interested in non-governmental organisations and civil society as sites of technological and political production and resistance.
While studying for his PhD, Matt worked as a Research Fellow for the ESRC Innogen Centre in Edinburgh and for the African Center for Technology Studies in Nairobi. He was also the postgraduate representative to the governing council of the Society for the Social Studies of Science. He is still actively involved in this society, particularly trying to encourage more STS scholars to work in developing countries and trying to facilitate more engagement between STS scholars and the people we study.
