Art and science meet head on at Exeter art gallery

Released: 14 February 2008

Prominent scientists and artists will come together on Wednesday 12 March for an exceptional open public event at an Exeter art gallery.

International experimental filmmaker Tony Hill and expert in the evolution of the eye Dr Julian Partridge will be among those taking part in Science in the Dock, Art in the Stocks: Convex/Concave, at the Gallery Terracina on Exeter Quay.

The free event, open to all, is part of the ESRC’s Festival of Social Science Week, and is organised by Egenis, the ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society, based at the University of Exeter.

“Convex/Concave will bring together artists and scientists to share ideas about vision and perception and to engage with one another’s work and methods of representation,” explains Deborah Robinson, artist in residence at Egenis.

The programme will begin at 1.45pm with a showing of a short film by Tony Hill, and will continue throughout the afternoon and evening with talks and further film showings, interspersed with lively debate about the relationship between science and art.

Tony Hill’s work has been shown at many art galleries, including Tate Britain, and at international film festivals. His short films explore different ways of looking at the world. Dr Partridge, whose career has centered on the study of animal vision, including the perception of colour, will talk on the evolution of eyes.

Doors open at 1.30pm and the event runs until 8.30pm. Admission is free and no booking is required. People are welcome to attend for the whole day or just a session or two.

Refreshments will be provided. Gallery Terracina can be found at McLains Warehouse, Haven Banks, Haven Road, Exeter.
