07 November 2005 - World Premiere Film Festival on Human Cloning comes to Edinburgh Filmhouse

Date: Monday 7th November 2005 Cult classics ‘The 6th Day’ and ‘The Boys from Brazil’ are just two of the titles featured in this varied programme of over 15 short films, documentaries and drama-fiction films dealing with human cloning. Post screenings, film goers will have the opportunity to explore the ethical, moral and social issues raised by the films with a specialist panel of biomedical and bioethics experts.

22 September 2005 - The Democracies of DNA?

Despite the possible major contribution of the life sciences to improved health and the prosperity of modern life, there are significant levels of public mistrust and uncertainty about how research in this area is governed. Exploring the causes of lack of public confidence and comparing the politics of the life sciences in Britain, Germany and the United States, Sheila Jasanoff, Pforzheimer Professor of Science and Technology Studies at Harvard University, will give the keynote address at the launch on the ESRC Genomics Policy and Research Forum on Thursday 22nd September 2005.

21 September 2005 - International Genomics Policy and Research Forum launched

The Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) Genomics Policy and Research Forum was formally launched in Edinburgh on Thursday 22nd September. Download the Launch Programme (PDF). The Forum will be a key component in connecting research on the social and economic implications of genetics discoveries, from a network of academic centres, with public and policy debate.

We are pleased to announce that Dr Aditya Bharadwaj will be joining the ESRC Genomics Policy and Research Forum as a Senior Research Fellow. Dr Bharadawaj has considerable expertise on the cross-cultural implications of biomedical and genetic sciences.

31 August 2005 - Forum Funds PFGS Colloquium

The ESRC Genomics Policy and Research Forum continued its productive relationship with the Postgraduate Forum on Genetics and Society (PFGS) this year with financial support of its 9th Annual Colloquium. The PFGS provides an opportunity for young scholars to present work in progress, exchange ideas, learn research techniques and forge synergies. The colloquium allows scholars from sociology, psychology, law, philosophy and bioinformatics to engage with each other to understand better how their different disciplines inform research into the social impact of scientific research in genomics.
