In this presentation Koen Jonkers presents those elements of his forthcoming book “Migration, Mobility and the Chinese Scientific Research System” which focuses on the evolution of the organisation and visibility of molecular life science research in this country. The first part of the presentation analyses the main institutional cum organisational changes which the Chinese research system underwent in the past three decades. The second part zooms in on the life sciences and discusses the effect of these changes, in combination with other factors, on China’s increasing international visibility of various molecular life science fields. The final part of the presentation discusses institutional changes at the micro-level of research collaboration. It argues that apart from the top down implementation of institutional and organisational change, changes in the Chinese research culture are partially related to the influence of returned researchers with foreign work experience.
