The last decade of microbiological research has seen new investigative approaches and a vast body of genomic data transform theoretical understandings of microbial interaction, evolution and biodiversity. This workshop explored the philosophical implications of these extraordinary developments within a broader historical and social context and, in the process, made steps towards constructing a research agenda for a future philosophy of microbiology and an understanding of microbiology’s social issues. Presentation papers will be published in a special issue of Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences.
