From mousetraps to (onco)mice: the international politics of biotech patents

Event: Seminar
Date: 27 Feb 2003 00:00

Speaker(s):

Graham Dutfield,

Herchel Smith Senior Research Fellow in Intellectual Property Law in the Intellectual Property Research Institute at Queen Mary and Westfield College (University of London)

Organised by: Innogen

Venue: University of Edinburgh It is often argued by critics that patents were only ever meant to protect mechanical devices with mousetraps often cited as a typical example. The oncomouse patent was a seminal event taking patent law into a completely new area, which for proponents is completely logical. The seminar will start by tracing the development of patent law in this area, explain how a mix of US and European standards became the international norm, and then discuss where things are likely to go in the future.
