Postgraduate Opportunities

Egenis, the ERSC Centre for Genomics in Society, is a multidisciplinary research centre, based at the University of Exeter. Egenis has a unique research profile in the social study of science, medicine and the philosophy of biology with a particular focus on emerging areas of genetic, genomic and post-genomic science. We have a lively postgraduate community from a wide range of backgrounds, including sociology, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, media studies, biology, chemistry and law.

We welcome applications from prospective PhD students.  Research here focuses on the social and philosophical aspects of genomic science and prospective PhD students should contact a member of academic staff to explore potential research topics. Additionally take a look at full details of our research projects. Undertaking a PhD at Egenis means that you will be completely integrated into our research community, with day-to-day contact with staff and other students. Our beautiful dedicated building houses our academic staff and 14 postgraduate research students, who regularly organise and engage in workshops, seminars, reading groups and briefings, creating plenty of opportunities for informal contact which complement your formal supervised sessions.

Egenis staff support and encourage PhD students to write and publish papers during the course of their studies, which may lead to collaborative projects and papers. But don’t take our word for it. Former PhD student Jean Harrington said, “Not only have I been able to benefit enormously from the knowledge and experience of the interdisciplinary team, but I have also received an incredible level of support and encouragement.” Her colleague Daniele Carrieri agrees: “Egenis is an excellent environment to study in. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive.”

Further information on studying here and funding opportunities are on the Department of Sociology and Philosphy PhD study page.
