Interior Traces

Senior Research Fellow Dr Hauskeller was one of a panel of guests at London's Science Museum on 5 May, 2009, discussing a radio drama entitled 'Interior Traces'.  Six 15-minute episodes portray two fictional characters and how their predisposition to cancer or to aggressive behavioural tendencies might be diagnosed and treated in 1906, in the present day and in 20 years’ time. At the event at the Museum's Dana Centre the panel discussed the episodes set in 2030. All six episodes were presented at the Cheltenham Science Festival, with a panel discussion in the evening in which Dr Hauskeller again took part..

The drama is a project funded by the Wellcome Trust. Readings from the play are accompanied by live music, and projection of a video compilation of 'images' of the brain, including drawings, scans, and genetic data. The panel discussions used the fictional scenarios of the drama to spark discussion about brain imaging and other novel medical technologies and the issues they raise.

John Dupré at Darwin College, Cambridge

The Egenis Director gave the closing lecture in the Darwin lectures at Darwin College on 6 March, 2009.

Darwin College has organised a series of eight public lectures every academic year since 1986. Each series has been built around a single theme, approached in a multidisciplinary way and, as the College says, "with each lecture prepared for a general audience by a leading authority on his or her subject". Prof Dupré's lecture 'The Boundaries of Darwin' attracted a capacity crowd of 550 people, with a substantial overflow audience watching the lecture on screen.  The talk is available to download or to listen online from the Darwin College website.

Start the Week

Professor John Dupré was a guest on the Radio 4 programme Start the Week on 1 December, 2009. The programme, hosted by Andrew Marr, brings together guests from various fields in the arts and sciences as well as commentators on politics and current affairs. Professor Dupré was talking about Genomes and What to Make of Them, the book he has co-authored with Egenis co-director Professor Barry Barnes.
