I was trained as a social anthropologist at Goldsmiths College, where I took my PhD with a thesis on the impact of rural social change on an agricultural and fishing community in Mediterranean Southern France.
I worked as a Lecturer in the Dept. of Anthropology at Goldsmiths after my doctorate. I was subsequently a Research Associate while carrying out fieldwork in the Basque town of Gernika (‘Guernica’); and I was Visiting Fellow in Anthropology at Goldsmiths from 2004–2006. Meanwhile, I was an AHRC Writing Fellow at the University of East Anglia.
I am also a member of the core working group for the ESRC Seminar Series, "Conflicts in Time: Rethinking 'Contemporary' Globalisation", at the Dept. of Anthropology, LSE.
I have undertaken two periods of long-term fieldwork, in Mediterranean France and Euskadi, funded by the ESRC, British Academy, and Central Research Fund of the University of London.
Research in a coastal Languedocian village (1996-1997, on-going) investigates the character of everyday experience of time and history under rural French modernity. Publications explore how historical ‘acceleration’ and cultural rupture are manifested in lived experience, and managed through discourses of heritage, kinship, loss and remembrance, historiography, experiences of tradition, continuity and rupture, and nostalgic mythologisations of history. Fieldwork (2001-2003) in Gernika, funded by a British Academy Larger Research Grant, extended such themes with research on the temporalities of sustainable development.
At Egenis I am working on a social scientific study of the Apomixis research network. Further information about my research can be found on the webpages of the Dept. of Sociology and Philosophy.
