PhD studentship available
Date Released: 18 December 2009Applications are invited for a 3-year fully ESRC-funded PhD studentship.
Egenis has a 3-year fully ESRC-funded PhD studentship available to start in April 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are seeking to recruit a student with a background in sociology, STS or socio-legal studies, a minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree and an ESRC-recognised Masters degree or equivalent training.
Egenis staff and students engage in a wide range of research interests, with a particular focus on the social aspects of emerging areas of genomics and postgenomic biosciences. This studentship will link with work being undertaken by Dr Christine Hauskeller and Dr Dana Wilson-Kovacs on the use of genetic knowledge and testing technologies for forensic purposes. The new forensic genetics research at Egenis will start in April 2010 and the PhD studentship can begin between April and September 2010 at the very latest. The studentship will cover all fees and provide a standard ESRC maintenance grant.
The student will benefit from the expertise and experience of working in a lively interdisciplinary research centre and a top 10 UK University and Sociology and Philosophy Department.
Outline proposals for a PhD project in the thematic area that engages with ‘the role and use of forensic DNA evidence’ are invited from suitable candidates. Proposals should clearly identify the aims and objectives of the research, its key research questions, the theoretical framework on which the project is based, the contribution it intends to make and the intended methodology.
How to apply
Prospective students should contact Christine Hauskeller in advance to discuss potential research outlines. Submission date for full applications is 26th February 2010. Applicants should submit a formal online application for a PhD in Sociology, including two academic references and a research proposal. Please clearly state on your application form that you wish to be considered for this studentship. Candidates for awards must have a relevant connection with the United Kingdom as outlined in the ESRC Research Studentships Guidance Notes for Applicants 2009.
