I will talk about how research, clinical practice and service provision in assisted conception is shaped by the market, drawing on data from a recently completed ESRC funded study of an embryo research laboratory and two assisted conception clinics, as well as interviews with key professionals working in the field. My main argument will be that although there are, in Charis Thompson’s words, a ‘confluence of privacies’ in this field, privacy in highly contested in practice, in both fee-paying and NHS contexts.
