About us

The ESRC Genomics Network (EGN) is a major investment by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), dedicated to examining the development and use of the science and technologies of genomics. The activities of the EGN span the whole field of genomics, covering areas as diverse as plant and animal genetics, embryonic stem cell research, and associated health applications.

The EGN spans five of the UK's leading universities, and involves more than one hundred researchers, from professors to PhD students, as well as an international cast of visiting research fellows. It is one of the largest social science investments in the ESRC's current portfolio.

Egenis is based at the University of Exeter in the UK, under the directorship of Professor John Dupré. Egenis has a strongly interdisciplinary culture, encompassing a range of perspectives from social science, biology, and philosophy. We produce first class social science research on the social impact of developments in genomic science, and engage with a broad range of users and stakeholders. To ensure that our research continues to meet the highest standards of academic excellence, Egenis has developed collaborations nationally and internationally with academics at the forefront of their fields. A strong commitment from the start of the centre in 2002 has been full and serious engagement with the content of the science itself.
